The Association of Friends of the Theatre of Chania, co-organized by the Region of Crete – Regional Unit of Chania and the Cultural Center of Chania, presents the work of Yannis Kalatzopoulos, “The Clothes of the King”, based on the fairy tale “The emperor’s new clothes” by Hans Christian Andersen.

The performances will be given at the Cultural Center of Chania, on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 December at 5 p.m. and at 7 p.m.

“The Clothes of the King” is a work overflowing with messages: revulsion and loathing for hypocrisy, injustice, authoritarianism, love for honesty, justice, democracy.

Yiannis Kalatzopoulos made an adaptation of the well-known fairy tale of Hans Christian Andersen just before the end of the dictatorship and the references to it are more than obvious. The poor and the insignificant become great, kings and all sorts of “strong” are ridiculed and discredited.

The play was first performed by the “Thessalian Theatre” during the theatrical period 1978-79, directed by Kostas Tsianos, set and costumes by Giorgos Ziakas and music by Loukianos Kilaidonis.
