From the monument of the fallen in the Monastery of Gouverneto, in a simple memorial ceremony, began the events of honor and remembrance for the 81st Anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

The memorial service in memory of the fallen of Akrotiri was performed by His Grace Bishop of Eumenia and abbot of the Monastery of Gouverneto, Mr. Irineos.

The mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandrakis, was at the spot, accompanied by the deputy mayors, Stelios Michailakis and Yiannis Giannakakis, while the thematic deputy regional governor of Crete, Kostas Gyparis, as well as representatives of the armed forces of the place, were also present.

The Mayor of Chania, in his short address, said: “The Battle of Crete forced ordinary people to become soldiers and fighters defending the homeland and to write one of the most important pages of the Second World War. ”

The Deputy Mayor of Culture, Yiannis Giannakakis, recounting the war events during the invasion of Akrotiri, pointed out: “At a time when the smoke of war threatens to cover the skies of the whole of Europe, it is necessary, studying our history, to realize that it is a story full of heroism and bravery. ”
