It is with great pleasure that the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania announces an event to celebrate the bilingual (Greek/English) publication of Serious Games by Jenny Marketou which will take place from 7pm to 9pm on Monday, July 18 at KAM, Center of Mediterranean Architecture.
The launch event is sponsored by the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania and the Municipality of Chania, Crete and brings together an interdisciplinary group of speakers which consists of Jenny Marketou, the artist and the book’s curator, Vassiliki Yiakoumaki, Anthropologist, Professor University of Thessaly, Elia Vardaki, Social Anthropologist, Researcher at the Technical University of Crete, Christos Fradellos, Religious Scholar, Jason Francisco, Professor Emory University and Fulbright Scholar and Dimitris Barnias, Music Producer and Composer will present his environmental composition titled “Dytikos”.
The invited speakers will discuss in different but interrelated ways, Serious Games, within the framework of contemporary art process and centering around themes of ruination, defacement and the afterlives of monuments such as Yiali Tzami. What kind of potentialities are opening up in those monuments and how art generates new experiences, engages in new ways of knowledge production, and invites the public to think alongside Serious Games, in search of new forms of embodied experiences, alliances, possibilities, temporalities for collective imaginaries, action and play.
The publication Serious Games emerged from the collection of commissioned new essays which are informed by the theoretical framework and contemporary artistic practices proposed by Serious Games, as well as from photo documentation and an archive of all material collected by the artist during research and during the process for the realization of Serious Games at Yiali Tzami (Mosque), as a commission from the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania.
